You crash diet only to pile the weight on again
Many people think that a low-fat diet is the key to effective weight loss. So
they ditch the fat, find that it is successful for a short period. They lose
the weight, only to pile it back on again. The thing is that the more high-carb
food you eat, the more you crave.
The truth is, if you are looking for the best weight loss method, crash dieting is the worst approach that you could possibly take.
Results don't come quick enough.
Well maybe you should have started sooner! Seriously though, if you crash diet
in an attempt to lose fat quickly your body will react. Years of evolution have
taught all animals how do deal with famine.
If you starve yourself your body does not know that you are doing it
deliberately - it thinks that you have fallen on hard times. In these
circumstances the last thing that it will do is draw on its reserves - your fat
- too quickly. After all it does not know when the famine will end and it does
not want its reserve to run low. But that's not all
Not only will your body be loath to draw on its reserves of fat but also it
will make sure, when you start eating normally again, that it replaces the
reserves as a priority. It makes sense doesn't it? If you are at risk of
starvation you need plenty of food in reserve don't you. Your body is not
stupid - it won't get caught out twice!
So don't starve yourself looking for quick results. Be patient - but determined!
You can get plenty of help and advice with weight loss, on this site and elswhere on the web.
You can't get motivated or you lose motivation after a few weeks (or
sooner!).
Losing weight is often seen as a trial - torture even - you feel forced to
undergo. The trouble is, with this approach, you will always feel that you are
a victim of your weight loss program or even worse a martyr to it.
Now this might sound a bit harsh but as The Eagles very non-PC song goes - "Get
Over It!". If you are going to lose weight first you have to want to - really
want to.
I have written a whole article on the subject of
weight loss motivation
.
You know you should eat healthier food but you can't resist Burger and
Fries.
Okay - then give yourself a treat now and again. I would have fries with
everything - I love 'em. But what increases my enjoyment even more is just
having them on special occasions - for example, to reward myself for something
- a job finished or an objective achieved.
There is no such thing as bad food - just bad lifestyle. As long as you think
carefully about what you eat then there is no reason why you can't achieve
effective weight loss and eat some so-called "junk" now and again.
You know you should exercise more but you don't have the time.
Try this little exercise. Think about all the things that you do have time for
- going to the pub, sitting in front of the TV (watching sport - not
participating). Which of these is more important than your health or your looks.
The sooner you stop kidding your self that there is nothing that you can do
about your weight then the sooner you will start to see results.
The real point is, exercising does not really take up very much time. The
weight loss plans that we recommend on this site all include exercise programs
of some sort. None of these needs hours in the gym or having to buy expensive
equipment.
